My sister Courtney sent me this image from her local farmer’s market in Los Angeles. I don’t have kids, so maybe my feelings will change about this, but I am always amazing by how over designed baby strollers are. I know this is really a wagon, rather than a stroller…but you get my point.
Either way I guess, it holds Beets quite nicely .

Another Shanghai Food-bike installment. Notice the trash can grill…

Mobile food bikes are a way of life in Shanghai, and serve up full meals plus everything in between. I even saw some bikes that were outfitted with kebab grills, and burners topped with piping hot caldrons of boiling eggs. Watch out for bumps.

My good friend Will took this photo while traveling through Chennai, India. Since I’ve been focusing on Bikes in China so much, it’s interesting to see how similarly they are used to “carry” in other parts of the world.

Keeping trash collection classy in Shanghai with a color-coordinated ensemble.  Trash collection is actually one of my favorite things to document when I travel. It all started way back when a friend and I backpacked our way through Europe for our senior thesis. Instead of taking pictures of the things we should have, like monuments and museums, we came back with images of trash cans, video of garbage trucks, and street cleaning.  I know at first it might seem like a weird concept, but trash is one of those things that every city has, and it’s how each place deals with it that lends a lot of insight into it’s culture.

You’ll begin to notice a trend in my images over the next week or so. Bikes…bikes…and more bikes… I was fascinated by all the ways in which “human-powered wheels” (in many forms) serve as the primary means of transport in China. Each one is specifically designed for a different function. Some for selling food, carrying lumber, people, and even catering to a quick nap.

I saw this photo while in a restaurant in Shanghai. It of laborers outside The Bank of Taiwan, on the The Bund.  Date of the photo is unknown, my guess is early 1900’s…

I’M BACK (finally)
Shanghai and Hong Kong treated me well, but I had to say goodbye and venture back home to Brooklyn. For my first post back, I have to share my favorite image from the whole trip, of this man carrying a ladder on a bicycle. This pretty much sums up how 95% of people transport themselves plus ANYTHING else they need to get from point A to point B. I’m Impressed…how about you?

Hot off the tail of my last adventure…I have repacked my bags and I’m spending 11 days in China. I took this photo the last time I was in Shanghai almost 6 years ago. My next stop will be Hong Kong and then back home to share all the things I saw with you!
